How Solar Works

Photovoltaic solar systems convert sunlight into electrical energy that can be used to power your home. There are four main elements of each home solar system, two of which are already in your house.

Photovoltaic solar systems convert sunlight into electrical energy that can be used to power your home.

First, your solar panels, comprised of photovoltaic (PV) cells, absorb sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) energy. Your solar panels convert most of the visible light spectrum and about 50% of the ultraviolet and infrared light spectrum to usable solar energy.

Next, your solar panels send DC energy to your inverters, which convert the DC energy to alternating (AC) energy.

Then, AC energy is sent through electrical conduit (installed by a licensed electrician) to your home’s main electrical panel. This is where your solar system connects to your home’s electricity system to power everything connected to it.

Lastly, any electricity not being utilized in your home is sent back to the grid. The utility meter measures both the amount of electricity drawn from the grid and the amount of excess solar electricity that is pushed into it.
